Chancellor presents to House, Senate committees as part of KU Cancer Day in the Capitol
TOPEKA -- Chancellor Douglas A. Girod and other KU leaders were in Topeka on January 18 to discuss how the state can ensure Kansans have access to the best possible cancer care.
The university hosted KU Cancer Day in the Capitol, which included opportunities for lawmakers to engage with KU administrators and healthcare professionals to discuss cancer care and research. The day featured presentations from Chancellor Girod to both the House Committee on Commerce, Labor, and Economic Development and the Senate Committee on Commerce, as well as free cancer screenings for guests in the Statehouse.
In particular, KU leaders discussed KU’s plans for a new KU Cancer Center facility, which will enable KU to bring together its research and clinical capabilities to the benefit of patients and families fighting cancer. KU is asking the state for a $75 million investment in this facility, which will trigger $75 million in matching funds from donors.
Chancellor Girod was joined in Topeka by Dr. Robert Simari, executive vice chancellor of KU Medical Center, Dr. Roy Jensen, director of the KU Cancer Center, and Dr. Ron Chen, chair of radiation oncology at KU Medical Center, each of whom presented to legislative committees and met with individual lawmakers throughout the day.
